Intelligent Television and Video are proud to present this fascinating insight into the BAe 146-200 "Whisper Jet" presented by Captain Nicholas Stein and First Officer Kevin Long.
You join Nick and Kevin at London Luton for a round trip to Rome Ciampino airport in Italy. We depart from Luton runway 26, on a Compton SID for our journey with Nick as Pilot Flying.
Flightdeck Tour
Once in the cruise Nick takes time to give you a detailed tour of the flightdeck and gives you many details about the systems and operational requirements of the 146, including the MWS (Master Warning System) with a demonstration of how the system works. Nick also takes you through the flight control systems and engines.
En-route we are treated to a spectacular view of the French Alps. We then make an approach to Rome Ciampino using runway 15.
Thrust Management System (TMS)
On our return leg Kevin is Pilot Flying as we again take-off on runway 15. Once in the cruise again Nick takes you through some more instruments including the TMS (Thrust Management System) and Kevin takes you around his instrumentation. Nick also gives you an insight into how he became an airline pilot.
Six Camera Shoot
We then start our descent back to Luton for an approach to runway 26 Hear the Air Traffic Control for our flights and follow the checklists as you discover the 146. This programme was filmed using six cameras and was recorded and edited utilising ITVV's full digital broadcast facilities.
Captain Nicholas Stein
Captain Nicholas Stein started flying aged 17, when he was awarded an RAF Flying Scholarship. Following University, he joined the RAF. After training he flew the C130 Hercules on world-wide operations, including 4 months in the Falkland Islands. In 1985 he did famine relief work in Ethiopia and in 1986 he accompanied the Red Arrows on a 6-week tour out of the Far East.
Nick then spent 6 years as a flying instructor, first on the Bulldog and then on the Jetstream, before returning to the Hercules as a Training Captain on 24 Squadron. Once again, his duties took him to many interesting places.
On retirement from the RAF, Nick joined the newly launched Debonair Airways. He is a Training Captain on the 146 and has 6000 flying hours.
Nick lives in Wiltshire with his wife and two young children. His hobbies include vintage aircraft, tennis, skiing and hillwalking.
Debonair
Debonair presently operates scheduled services from London Luton to Paris, Barcelona, Munich, Dusseldorf Express, Rome, and Madrid with twelve British Aerospace 146 Whisper Jets, allowing passengers a spacious 33" seat pitch, which is one of the greatest amongst any economy airline. In Europe, the airline links Munich and Dusseldorf to Barcelona and Munich to Dusseldorf. In 1998 Debonair launched daily flights from London Gatwick to Barcelona and this year became the official carrier for the jubilee by the Sanctuary of Lourdes, thereby linking Rome to Lourdes on a daily basis with effect from March 1999. Debonair recognises the different levels of service business travellers need.
