The nose is vibrant and complex with lifted, perfumed aromas of spicy Grenache, complemented by the plum, chocolate and savoury aromas of Shiraz and Mourvedre. The palate shows intense Grenache clove and allspice characters melding with generous chocolate and dark berry Shiraz characters. Fine tannins, spicy oak influence and lingering savoury notes further enhance this blend, which has the ability to develop further complexity with up to four years’ cellaring. Following the extraordinary success of Oomoo Shiraz, the Hardys Tintara team have blended three of the region’s best red varieties to produce a stylish new wine. The 2005 Hardys Oomoo GSM carries great elegance and spice. A blend of Grenache 47%, Shiraz 46% and Mourvedre 7%, fruit was sourced from vines in McLaren Vale, some up to 70 years old. Seasoned oak was used to let the wine’s primary fruit profiles speak for themselves, and this release is weighty with an abundance of ripe juicy fruit flavours and soft tannins. The winemakers aim was to highlight the lifted spice and aromatics of Grenache, the wonderful fruit weight and density of Shiraz and the savoury notes of Mourvedre. Weather conditions during the ripening period of vintage 2005 were warm throughout the region, and the resultant Grenach-Shiraz-Mourvedre carries vibrant fruit intensity and ripe tannins that are consistent with the Oomoo style. Individual vineyard components were kept separate until blending and maturing in seasoned French and American oak barriques for 12 months.
